Porsche announced that the new 718 Cayman and Boxster GTS will be powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six.
The automaker on Wednesday unveiled its upcoming 2021 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 and 718 Boxster GTS 4.0, both powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-6. The engine makes 394 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque, up from 365 hp in the current 718 S models. Perhaps most importantly, the GTS 4.0 creates a flat-6 soundtrack that enthusiasts have demanded since the 718 switched to a 2.0-liter turbo-4.
Like the Cayman GT4 and Spyder, the 718 GTS 4.0 pairs exclusively to a 6-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. Porsche said the combination will propel the 718 GTS 4.0 up to 60 mph from a standstill in 4.3 seconds, en route to a top speed of 182 mph.
The GTS 4.0’s ride height is 0.8 inch lower than the standard 718 Boxster and Cayman models. It’s fitted with 20-inch black wheels, and because of the increased power output of the new 4.0-liter engine, the brake rotors are now bigger, measuring 13.8 inches in the front and 13 inches in the rear, and have six-piston calipers that are painted red. Porsche’s ceramic composite brakes are also available.
Both cars ride on 20-inch light-alloy wheels painted in Satin-Gloss Black wrapped in 235/35 ZR 20 tires at the front and 265/35 ZR 20 tires at the rear.
The standard Sport Chrono package includes Porsche’s Track Precision App, which allows drivers to record track runs, and upload performance-related data (like the pedal position, the steering angle, and the racing line) onto their smartphone for analysis. For street driving, there’s a 7-inch touchscreen in the center stack that buyers can upgrade with internet-connected navigation software that provides real-time traffic data.
The Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 is expected to start around $87,000 and the Boxster GTS 4.0 will start at just under $90,000. That’s about $10,000 less than the slightly more powerful 718 Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder, which will start at $100,450 and $97,550 when they arrive in the spring.
