BMW Working On A New M2 And M2 Gran Coupe

BMW has reportedly given the green light for the next-generation M2 Coupe, which will retain its rear-drive architecture unlike the rest of the 2-Series models which transitioned on the FWD.

Until late last year, the prediction was that the M2 Gran Coupe would be based on the 2 Series coupe and powered by the 3.0-liter, single-turbo straight-six in the M2 that made 365 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque, shifting through either a six-speed manual transmission or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Since then, we’ve met the 405-hp M2 Competition, a limited edition 444-hp M2 CS, and the 2 Series GC. The altered landscape results in a new forecast for the M2 and the M2 Gran Coupe.

This twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre petrol unit, dubbed S58, replaces the similarly configured S55 used by the current M2 and promises the same high-revving characteristics, with a redline of 7200rpm.

As with today’s model, BMW plans to offer the new M2 with a six-speed manual gearbox and an electronically controlled Active M Differential. There will also be the option of an eight-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox, which would be crucial if the car is to receive a mild-hybrid system. This will replace the current M2’s dual-clutch automatic, matching developments elsewhere in the BMW M range.

In addition, and unlike previous reports on the matter, BMW is said to offer a fully-fledged M variant of the four-door Gran Coupe and of the five-door 1-Series. The M2 Gran Coupe supposedly gets its power from a hyped-up version of the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder in the M235i Gran Coupe that makes 301 hp and 332 lb-ft. When converted to M use, it would make 400 hp and send power to all four wheels via a fully variable all-wheel drive system.
