Bugatti Chiron Super Sport Revealed With 273-MPH Top Speed, And $3.9 Million Price Tag

Bugatti Chiron Super Sport

After Bugatti built a stunning Super Sport 300+ back in 2019 when it smashed the 300 mph production barrier for production cars with the 304.77 mph (490.48 km/h) Chiron Super Sport 300+.

While the Super Sport 300+ was molded after the record-breaking car driven at Volkswagen Group’s Ehra-Lessien test track in Germany, the new Super Sport has a different finish. It retains the reworked body stretched by 25 centimeters (9.8 inches) compared to the standard Chiron for optimal airflow at high speeds.

The Super Sport might be packing the same 1578 hp (1600 PS) and 1180 lb ft version of Bugatti’s quad-turbo W16 as the record breaker, rather than the 1480 hp (1500 PS) and 1180 lb ft of the regular Chiron, but this time top speed has been electronically limited to 273 mph (440 km/h) in the interests of ‘safety and homologation’. The Chiron Super Sport will also sprint to 60 mph from rest in under 3.0 seconds, hit 124 mph in 5.8 seconds and 186 mph in 12.1 seconds. The car is also 7% quicker than other Chirons.

But aside from potentially losing you a top speed bragging war with a Koenigsegg Agera owner in the country club bar, that reduction in top speed doesn’t make the Super Sport less of a car. In fact, it likely makes it much more enjoyable to drive, because freed from the need to make this Chiron safe and stable at over 300 mph, Bugatti’s engineers have been able to concentrate on making the tires and suspension work at real speed.

The Chiron Super Sport rides on a bespoke set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires rated at an insane 317 mph. This is made possible by reinforced belts that were torture tested using a test bench originally built for the Space Shuttle program. Bugatti also worked on the Chiron’s chassis to ensure it delivers a combination of high-speed stability and comfort. This was primarily done via the dampers, along with harder springs and new tuning for the various driving modes: EB, Handling, Autobahn, and Top Speed. You’ll also notice the new wheel design, which Bugatti has made unique to the Chiron Super Sport.

Pricing for the Chiron Super Sport starts at 3.2 million euros (approximately $3.9 million) and customers can expect to receive their cars in early 2022. Bugatti hasn’t mentioned how many examples are destined for production.
